Chapter 32

The Drive Home

It was 7:00pm, and the crawler was rolling over the southeast pass, away from the valley of the swamps of sulfur. Its stinky pungent aroma wafting on the breeze managed to penetrate even the enclosed space of the cabin where Hydra, Persephone, Bertie, and Thermos were huddled together.

“I can’t believe this is happening!” said Bertie in fits of tears. “What’s going to happen to dad?”

“Don’t worry, Bertie. I’m sure Jax will help Dad out, and he’s more capable than I think we give him credit for. If there’s one thing I know, it’s that Fallacius is an opportunist. He doesn’t come at you with guns blazing. He likes to make shady deals--”

“I can’t believe Dad was an indentured miner!”

“There’s a lot of people who carry around dark secrets at the Enclave,” said Persephone.

“Like who?” asked Bertie. Persephone showed Bertie her little yellow canary tattoo.

“What’s that?”

“Uhm, is that really something she needs to know about?” asked Hydra. Persephone glared at her, irritated and offended.

“What shouldn’t I know about? Tell me!”

“I was a canary, a kind of private entertainer--”

“You mean like, juggling and doing magic tricks and stuff?”

“Think more grown up.”

“Oh…you mean like…ew!” said Bertie. Persephone frowned. “Oh no, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to offend you!”

“It’s alright, Bertie. Like your father, I didn’t have a choice. I won’t get into the details though,” said Persephone, responding to a look Hydra was shooting her.

“There’s bad things going on at the Enclave right now, and Hydra and I thought it was best for you to come with us because we want to keep you safe,” said Thermos.

“Fine, but let’s get one thing straight. I ain’t no kid!”

“Oh boy,” said Thermos, under his breath.

“I heard that!”

“Look, I know you’re not a little kid, but you’re still young, and while we’re not your parents, we are adults, and we’re gonna help look after you and keep you safe at the Oasis,” said Hydra.

“I can manage just fine on my own thanks,” said Bertie.

“I’m just trying to say that me and Ther are here to help--”

“I’m tired. I think I’m gonna go lie down.”

“Sheesh! What’s gotten into her?” said Hydra as Bertie left.

“This is a drastic and sudden change for reasons she doesn’t fully understand. This has got to be hard on her. She’s not normally like this. She just needs time to adjust,” said Thermos.

“So what’s in that dossier Jax gave you?” asked Persephone.

“I don’t know, let’s see,” said Hydra, reaching for it.

“Whoa! Hey! He gave that to me! What if it’s top secret--”

“It doesn’t say for Ther’s eyes only on it, now does it?”

“Well no, but--”

“What did I tell you about trying to keep secrets from me? Do you really want to have that discussion again?”

“No! Sorry sweetie! My bad! Go ahead, open it up!”

“That’s what I thought!” said Hydra, playfully patting his leg.

“Wow! She’s got you wound tighter than a yoyo!” laughed Persephone. Thermos frowned.

“That’s just how it is Persephone…that’s just how it is…”

“Hey, come on! It ain’t so bad! He does what I want, and he gets certain perks.
